Camp Hamby is located in Summerville, GA on the banks of a little creek in the valley of Lookout Mountain. In 1968, Mr. Hugh Hamby of Menlo United Methodist Church donated land to be used as a Christian camp for young people. Through the efforts of numerous, dedicated volunteers, a ministry developed that has touched the lives of thousands of many children and adults. The day camp has grown since 1981 when it served 38 children to now serving around 300 children. Camp Hamby Day Camp is blessed with a devoted staff made up of teen counselors and adult volunteers, most of whom have been involved with the camp since they were campers. It is directed by Liz Wells, great granddaughter of the late Hugh Hamby, and the assistant director is Amy Housch. Liz and Amy have been involved with Camp Hamby for the past 30 years as campers, counselors, and staff members.
Campers enjoy a fun-filled day participating in numerous activities while learning about the love of Jesus. The children rotate to different activities throughout the day: nature, music, arts/crafts, Bible exploration, recreation, and discovery. It is tradition to build boats/rafts in nature each year and race them in the creek. On Friday they are treated with an inflatable water slide during their recreation time. The program for the families is on Friday where they share what they learned throughout the week and sing a few traditional songs. Camp Hamby is special to a lot of people and is open to all denominations. Mr. Hamby would be proud of how Camp Hamby has touched the lives of so many.
